Oh, Just A Spell....

Take your time to get there.
Don't worry about ever getting there.
Feel free to digress and never return.
And let form announce its own self.
Write in Crow. At the end of it all, I
never meant for this thing to happen.
Ever.

Franklin Road

it's not my place to stay
when night torque wrenches
all conversations shut.
and it's me alone again
on Franklin Road, riding
a row of teeth or slipping
over tastebuds on a tongue,
whatever waits to swallow me
whole as a goldfish in a dare,
or dragon rising from its lair,
or the one volunteer miner
dropping down an elevator
shaft to seek survivors.
Trees offer no light at all,
huddled over the road,
defeated angels in prayer,
"God, leave us hope...
we've seen too much, we
sentinels of Franklin Road."
Best country bar in the county—
too far out of town, out by
the trailer parks, fishing holes
and illegal hunting grounds—
was tied like a metallic balloon
to a city so small cats crossed
it nightly collecting the news.
30 dark miles of inbetween.
As much my home as anywhere.

One Vastly Incomplete Moment In Memory

The rain fell in nails,
cold as kids can be,
night dark as absence.
Lighthouse watching out,
through a window ghosting
a Christmas ornament
across my view of our front lawn
and the street to everywhere else.

My Head

Maybe i hit my head, but the life I led:

Oak trees twisted into shoelace tips.

The sea ran out of breath.

Wild horses held their gangs at bay.

Earthquakes spoke.

Wisdom didn't fit our library voices.

Skin talked to skin.

People running everywhere,
each with a different fear.

Me in a car that ain't fast enough.

Tumbleweeds

When I was a kid, Santa Anas
blew tumbleweeds in herds
down every street. Amazing
to see plants move fast
as me on my bike on the way to school.
Nowadays, no tumblweeds. None.
You see extinction for yourself,
if you've lived this long.
None takes over the biosphere.

3-Day Suit Store

First, in the 3-Day Suit Store,
they dressed me in Killer Whale,
but I didn't like the tightness of purpose.

Then, it was Bull Elephant,
but I didn't like the responsibility.

Dolphin looked good, but
I can't laugh and play all day.

Finally, they dressed me in dog,
and it seemed to fit just fine,
small and nearly invisible.

Notes From The Dog Park

i pulled four fingers straight across my face
and sighed.
This life, man, this life.

Outer space called.
Didn't pick up.
Still never do.

Freeway sounds like stock cars
at New Smyrna Speedway,
my blood audio.

She looked at me like I was melting,
prayed that I'd take shape.
i kept it animal simple.

At the funeral, I was so proud of my friend.
He lived it like he said it,
and left the loudest silence.

We can't believe how hot it is,
as if outside is an HVAC mistake,
and someone needs to be called.

Air conditioning is weather for robots,
machine climate for machines.
It's a lie.

Sometimes, I wish I wasn't me.
Maybe it's because I have done was,
and I'm curious to try wasn't.

The trees and shrubs told me today
a suburban street is a starving whore
compared to the way it once was.

"Come on over to we." Wait, what?
"Come on over to we." No, please.
A call to surrender, right? I am me!

This world does not work the way it was explained to you.
